Periodontal Disease

Gum disease, or pyorrhea, should properly be referred to as periodontal disease; that is, a disease that affects those tissues surrounding the teeth.

Early signs of periodontal disease are first noticed in the gingival or "gum" tissues. If the disease allowed to progress, it may lead to recession of the gingival tissue, destruction of the underlying supporting bone, loosening of teeth, and eentually tooth loss. Periodontal disease is the number one reason for tooth loss in the adult populvation.

The surface of healthy gingival tissue should appear pink, knife edged, and stippled like an orange peel. Various shades of pink may be characteristics of healthy tissue depending on the patient's ethnic background and skin tones. Stippling, the orange-peel-like appearance, may also vary according to age and sex.

There are five cardinal symptoms of early periodontal disease that show up in the gum tissue: redness, tendency to bleed easily, tenderness, sponginess, and very slight swelling. Any one of these symptoms or all may be present at one time.

If any of the above mentioned symptoms occur in your mouth, seek your dentist for the treatment of the periodontal disease. The sooner the diseased state is detected, the sooner it may be arrested.

About Hougang Dental @ Orchard
Many people who are not familiar with us will ask us why we are calledHougang Dental Centre when we are located in the heart of Orchard Road. Well, that's because our clinic has its humble beginnings in the Hougang heartlands. Dr Chan Joon Yee took over a dental practice at Blk 631, Hougang Avenue 8 in January 1991 and has been providing Hougang heartlanders with basic, general dental services ever since. Dr Chan Joon Yee graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1988. After completing his National Service as dental officer in the navy, he began private practice by working as a locum at various private clinics from Jurong, Eunos to Orchard Road. With a keen interest in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Dr Chan frequently consults TCM specialists on alternative therapies. He also has an interest in wilderness medicine, anti-aging science and exercise physiology. Dr Chan speaks English, Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese, Hokkien and Malay. With Thailand being his second home, he also speaks Thai. Many of the patients who identify our practice with cosmetic dentistry are already very familiar with our Empress crowns. They look really cool and not only improved social lives, but career opportunities as well. Indeed, our "instant orthodontics" with Empress crowns have helped quite a number of people to look good for their job interviews and wedding photos. We started Hougang Dental Centre way back in 1991 at a housing estate in Singapore called Hougang. We have been providing general dental services until recent years when we started to focus on cosmetic dentistry. We now have a new office located in the heart of Orchard Road in Singapore. We can do a whole range of general or cosmetic dental procedures including implants at our new facility. We are also able to provide sedation for anxious patients who want to sleep through their dental procedure.

My wisdom tooth surgery was done by Dr. Chan. It costs me $450. Well, I think this is a reasonable price.

Would you recommend the clinic?

The assistants is very polite and gentle.
